Merry Christmas

For the final Pressphotoman blogpost of 2025, a search through the archives provided the perfect subject.

Launched in 1904, the Daily Mirror was Britain’s first tabloid newspaper and it soon became a hit with the public.

One of the reasons for its success was its bold use of photography as this front page from the paper’s Christmas Day edition in 1906 well illustrates.

Daily Mirror (25th December 1906). From British Newspaper Archive.

Closer inspection of the credit reveals the image was taken from a “stereograph copyright, Underwood and Underwood, London and New York.”

The entrepreneurial activities of this 3D photography company helped revolutionise the visual appearance of newspapers and magazines around the world.

So it’s pleasure to share this example of U&U’s instinct for a press photo with all the trimmings.

In this case, the stereographer responsible is not named.

However, if it was a member of Underwood’s London staff, regular readers may well be able to suggest a possible name.

Taking the lead offered by the Daily Mirror, Pressphotoman takes this opportunity to wish all our readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

After a festive break, the blog will return and is looking forward to sharing yet more photohistory posts during 2026.
